While rolling up hose, Fireman Andrew K. Wright of Engine 17 collapsed after fighting a fire at 66 Pike Street in an abandoned synagogue. Members of Engine 17 quickly gave him first aid before rushing him to Gouverneur Hospital where he died. He was thirty-four years old and a member of the Fire Department since June 6, 1953 and was a Police Officer for six years before that. Born in Manhattan, he moved to Staten Island in 1928 as a small child. He was not married but left a brother, George, a member of Engine 162, and a sister.
