Chief Dooley was injured on April 16, from a fall as he was descending a pole from the third too the second floor in the quarters of Engine Co. 220 at 530 11th St. His injuries consisted of a fractured skull. He was transported to the Methodist Episcopal Hospital, where pneumonia set in. Chief Dooley later passed away on June 6, 1931. He was a member of the department for 50 years, spending 28 years as a chief.

Battalion Chief John J. Dooley of the 48th Battalion was sliding the pole from the third floor to the second floor when he lost his grip and fell. He fractured his skull in the fall. After a time in the hospital he returned home and then back to the hospital suffering from pneumonia. A member of the old Brooklyn Fire Department since October 15, 1887, he was promoted to Captain on July 1, 1889. A Battalion Chief since 1922 he had been in command of Battalion 48 for the last five years. The fifty-year veteran was married and had one son and was seventy-one years old at the time of his death.

DOOLEY-JOHN J. DOOLEY, on June 6, chief of the 48th Battalion, N.Y.F.D., beloved father of Joseph F. Funeral from his residence, 203 Dean st. on Wednesday, June 10, at 9:30am thence to St. Paul's R. C. Church, where a solemn requiem mass will be offered Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.
