FDNY. Red Hook - Brooklyn, New York

Captain James H. Savage [Ladder 131] was overcome by smoke on July 3, 1943 while operating at 435 Court Street. He was removed to two different hospitals for treatment, but never regained consciousness. Two hospital interns spent over fifty hours at Captain Savage’s bedside treating him. When he did not respond to treatment, an iron lung was procured from Jewish Hospital, but that too was of no avail. Captain Savage was a member of the Department for seventeen years and left behind a wife and two children. (From "The Last Alarm" by Boucher, Urbanowicz & Melahn, 2007)
