Fireman Peter Gaffney - E 238
A four-alarm fire heavily damaged the two-story warehouse of the American Manufacturing on Noble Street in Greenpoint, used to store jute and hemp. Dressel and Rank died after being overcome by toxic fumes given off by the burning jute. Another member of the company, Fireman Peter Gaffney, was severely overcome, and died the next day as a result. There were 15 other firefighters overcome, but they all recovered.
