Shortly after 3pm this afternoon the Port Washington Fire and Police departments were alerted for a car into the water in the vicinity of North Hempstead Beach Park on West Shore Road. Fire and Police units were on scene immediately. Although there was no visible car in the water, the caller was interviewed and insisted that she saw the car in the water and gave an approximate location. Assistant Chief Donald Reese had advised that he could see something in the water but was unable to tell what the object was. Chief of Department Brian Waterson immediately requested Nassau County Marine and Aviation to respond as well as NYPD Aviation along with divers and the Oyster Bay Fire Department dive team. Nassau County Aviation had located a body floating in the water and the Port Washington Fire Department deployed an inflatable boat. The crew was able to remove the victim from the water and bring him to shore where he was taken to an awaiting ambulance. Unfortunately the victim was pronounced at scene. Marine units as well as PWFD Marine 1 continued to search for additional victims and the vehicle. No additional victims were located however the car was located utilizing Side scanning sonar on 85M1. The NCPD Marine bureau divers had the entered the water and hooked a chain to the car so that ESU could remove it from the water. Once the car was in land it was searched to ensure there were no additional victims. All units were released at 7:30pm.
Port Washington Fire Department was assisted by NCPD Marine & Aviation, Oyster Bay FD, Oyster Bay Constables, Glenwood FD, Roslyn Rescue EMS, Manhasset FD EMS, NCFM Rehab unit, NC OEM Merv unit, Mineola FD Drone team and of course the PWPD and NCPD. Text & photo courtesy Port Washington FD.
