“Just as we were approaching the Bay Parkway exit, we noticed a cloud of dust right in front of us. Two cars had gotten into an accident, and one was on fire. We pulled over and immediately called the Brooklyn Fire Dispatcher and notified them of the car crash and fire. There was a victim in the front seat but the door was heavily damaged, so I had to go around to the passenger side. The fire was continuing to grow. I was able to reach in and unbuckle his seatbelt and began to pull him out. I was able to get him over the center console and out of the vehicle. Shortly after, the vehicle became fully engulfed in fire. As first responders, it is ingrained into you that you help on or off-duty, Whether it was another off-duty Firefighter, EMT, Paramedic, or Police Officer, I’m sure they all would have done that same thing to help save this person’s life.” – Lt. Rich Cannon Hook and Ladder Co. 148
