Hook and Ladder 96

Years before Ladder 54 was organized, Engine 96 was located on Bruckner Blvd near Fretly Ave by themselves and was remote from a nearby Ladder Company.
As a result, Engine 96 was given a small ladder truck with ground ladders only and that part of Engine 96 was designated Hook and Ladder 96 being staffed by the members of Engine 96

Ladder 19 was also stationed with Engine 96 before Ladder 54 was organized. Ladder 19 also served with Eng 68.

Engine 96 was considered to be a combo company, but only took the ladder with them on runs east of Bruckner Blvd.

I was in the process of responding to "RES551CUE" question after I sent the picture to Brad, aka "Signal73".

This was my response;

"YES, I have a picture that was passed onto me which I am asking one of our members to post for me".

BUT before I could post that, Mr "Signal73" already had the picture posted for us.

In 1900, the Bronx was a two truck borough; both in the 14th Battalion

Ladder 17 at 589 East 143rd Street Their district ran from Harlem River, 144th Street, Willis Ave, 138th Street, Alexander Ave, to Harlem River.

Ladder 19 at 886 Forest Avenue Their district ran from East River and Cabot Street to Legget Ave. to Dawson Street or East 153rd Street to Westchester Ave. to St Ann's Ave. to East 163rd Street to Stebbins Ave. to Dongan Street to Hunts Point Road to Mohawk Ave, to Bronx River to East River.

The 15th Battalion ( Engine Companies 45, 48, 61, 62, 63, 64, 69, 70) had no ladder companies.

While you are technically correct that there were only two ladder "companies" in the Bronx in 1900, Engines 45, 48, 50, 52, 61, 62, 68, 69, and 70 all operated with ladder sections at the turn of the 20th century, just as Engine 96 would later do.

From June 1st 1935 until December 3rd 1951 E96 operated in the same fashion. (There was a brief interruption from March until October of 1941 while E 96's firehouse was moved back 100 ft for the widening of Eastern Boulevard.)
On December 3rd 1951 engine 96 gave up its American LaFrance pumper, Seagrave hose wagon, and City service ladder truck, all replaced by a 1951 Ward La France quad. The company retained its extra personnel to man the quad as both engine and truckies. The back step of that Ward LaFrance was really crowded.
