Here's what he said:

"23 years ago, shortly after 9 am, American Airlines Flight 587 crashed into a residential neighborhood in Rockaway Queens.

In light of the fact that this was exactly two months and one day after the 9/11 attacks, all of us who responded to the incident thought that we were contending with another terrorist attack.

Authorities eventually blamed a combination of equipment failure and poor training as the cause of the crash.

260 people (passengers and crew) as well as five people on the ground were killed.

May they continue to rest in peace".

End of Quote.

Yes, many of us remember watching news coverage of this event and thought we were under attack again and where would they strike next.

At the time, 11/12/01, Deputy Chief Pete Hayden, who was formerly the Chief of Department, lived in the area and self-responded, to the major air crash. With his vast experience and knowledge of the area he took charge of the operation until the arrival of additional staff Chiefs. His unselfish response while "Off Duty" almost surely prevented additional loss of life. Chief Hayden was the Division Commander of Division1 when I was the Captain of Engine 26, and he was and is, someone everyone in the FDNY looked up to. Truly one of the great Chief's in the FDNY.
Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired

My parents, who lived in Howard Beach at the time, watched that plane go down. They and some of my other family were witnesses to several plane crashes in that area over the decades.
