    My father, a World War II Navy Veteran, taught me how to splice - at least three tucks for manila and at least five tucks for nylon. Splices are stronger than knots.

    According to the article, a total of 5 ladder companies responded to the Constellation Fire - a "staggering" total. Nowadays there are usually at least 4 ladders on most All-Hands.

    There was a theory at one time that when glass bottles were still around for soda and beer that a part of a broken bottle could act as a magnifying glass and it would concentrate the sun's rays on dry brush and start a fire. I believe that theory was debunked and it certainly wouldn't be true...

    I believe Engine 226 is the oldest firehouse in continuous use. Engine 26 was disbanded for a short time.
