    Anniversary of GOLDEN VENTURE

The morning of June 6, 1993 in the wee hours, the Chinese refugee ship GOLDEN VENTURE grounded off Rockaway. FDNY responded and our fireboats launched small boats in heavy surf to remove passengers. Here is FIRE FIGHTER off shore as members help in removal. Incidentally this was the anniversary...

If not an exact match for Nedick's, the New England hot dog bun would be close.  Anyone know if these can be found in the City? https://newengland.com/today/food/new-england-made/new-england-style-hot-dog-rolls/

    A LOOK BACK.

"On The Job" the FDNY television training program was broadcast on Channel 31, then known as WUHF. An article in WNYF (1st/1962) covers the program's inception, early program topics, and brief instructions on how to adapt your television set to receive it. A follow up  piece in WNYF (2nd/1965)...

Note in the first photo, 10 Truck seems to be hanging draperies on quarters for some celebration.  They are using what in some departments was called a "Bangor Ladder" equipped with tormentor poles to help in raising and stabilizing the ladder.  They usually came in lengths of 40, 45 feet or...

    Old Aerial Maps NYC

MANY other great features on the DOITT maps. As MACK pointed out, the aerial photos for previous years are centered exactly, so if you choose a particular building address, the older aerial maps would show the exact current boundary of the building. For example a friend lives in Battery Park...

    FDNY DIVE TEAMS.

I have no more to add other than what the WNYF article on Welfare Island accident says.

Here is the even older Brooklyn FD Shop at Canton & Bolivar Sts.  Bolivar ran east-west between Willoughby & Myrtle opposite the western side of Fort Greene Park. Probably former vollie house next door, Lafayette Engine 5 which was on Canton Street now used by BFD.

Below track level of the Hell Gate Bridge are a series of inverted bowstring arches.  These are right at the entrance of the Rock, and at one time spanned Little Hell Gate.  More at https://hiddenwatersblog.wordpress.com/2016/03/16/little-hell-gate-2/

Wasn't the bridge that restricted Towers just beyond, and south of, the entrance to the Rock?  At one time the roadway spanned Little Hell Gate a waterway that separated Randalls and Wards Islands. It was ultimately filled, but the remaining bridge may still not have allowed the weight.  I think...

Ending scenes of E288 following the camera car alone, looks like it may be Eliot Ave in the 70 - numbered streets

FDNY and NYC Firehouses and Fire Companies

You pretty much covered the early Mack C-Model tower assignments. By the 1970s, when a Company was newly assigned a Tower it was published on the Department Orders. In fact beforehand, I think the Orders also published when a Company was sent for "New Apparatus Training".  Can't remember if this...

FDNY and NYC Firehouses and Fire Companies

L146 was organized on Richardson Street in January 1916.  I understood the new quarters was supposed to house the (never organized) Water Tower 7.  So as built, one bay may have lettered Hook & Ladder 146, and the other Water Tower 7.  Just before that E229 moved to that house in 1915.  I think...

FDNY and NYC Firehouses and Fire Companies

Correction on my last.  The WNYF 1955-3 cover photo was not the Brooklyn Borough Call, but a Simultaneous Call lumberyard fire at 186th Street and Jamaica Ave, Hollis, Queens a few days later 5/15/1955.

Nice shot with the two Macks, Mack.  Location is not too far from Box 290, Stewart Ave & Scholes St which had a 5 alarm Borough Call on 8/12/1965 Signal was 77-290-66-55-277 (the supply box Manhattan Box 277 is now Clinton & Delancey Sts, just across the Williamsburg Bridge).  (JK: do you...

I remember Engine 206's two pieces were the last, lasting into the 1970s. While most other two-piece engines had 1954 Macks or 1950s Wards as second pieces.  Last I remember was 206 had a pair of c1965 Mack C-model diesels.  A really sharp looking set.
