    I'm not going to get into a vollie career debate.  The question posed was about NYC, not Rochester or wherever, I work here in NYC, it affects me, I have insight.  And yes, opening of a new house would mean more guys needed.  We are already understaffed as it is in our city, for our operations...

    5th alarm, 3rd ave and 39th st.

    Much has changed since then.  Reduced manning, equipment, heavier fire loads and relief come to mind.  Much of the fire could not be reached b/c we had to wait for it to burn through the membrane roof that had fallen in and cover many pockets.  The 5th was due impart by companies going to work...

    Look a bit North and East for work.....E62 L32 have been the spot for steady work for sometime....during the "War Years" they where a camp....it wasn't until the neighborhood changed.

    Aside for when the City Burned to the ground twice, in modern times it would be the World Trade Center on Sept 11, 2001.  There where multiple boxes that where transmitted well beyond a 5th alarm.
