    Fireboat McKean Marine Company 1

In 1955 prior to the Mckean going into service, my younger brother and I spent an over-nighter on board compliments of our father Engineer Ed Byrnes. It was quite an adventure for a couple of eleven and nine year old boys. My father eventually went on to serve as both a Lieutenant and a Captain...

    Engine 18

Thank you, Memory Master. I was pretty sure it was a '54 L Mack. By the time of the fire FDNY had acquired over 130 newer pumpers that maybe they had picked up one of them. Again, thanks much. Ed B.

    Engine 18

As the anniversary of the 23rd Street fire past on Saturday, a question came to mind. Would anyone out there know what type of pumper Engine 18 was running at that time? Thanks in advance. Ed B.

    23rd St fire

Do any of the good old boys with a head full of knowledge have a list of the alarm assignments for the Wonder Drug store fire 17 October 1966?   Thanks, all.

    A Staten Island engine question

Thank you all. You know, just when you think you know something, something else comes along and throws everything akimbo. I guess I always thought that "two piece" and "2nd section" were one and the same thing. Ah well! Count the day lost if you don't learn something new. Thanks again.

    A Staten Island engine question

Thanks for your response, Mack. I'm confused though. Is there a difference between a 2nd "piece and a 2nd "section"? During the "War Years" busy companies were given a second unit that was designated with a small '2' following the company number on the pumper/truck. Is (was) this the same as a...

    A Staten Island engine question

I recently came across a photo of a 1965 Mack C95 pumper assigned to Engine Co. 158 back in the day. The strange part is, it's marked as 158(2). According to Mike Boucher's excellent listings, Engine 158 doesn't show a second section. As a matter of fact none of the S.I. companies show any...

    1983 American LaFrance pumpers

A question for any old time MPOs out there. How many 1983 ALFs were delivered and were they any better than the '80s and '82s? Thank you kindly.

    Shop built engine

Wow! I sure didn't expect such a response along with a short history lesson. Thanks much. Raybrag, there's a photo of "The Beast" on page 105 in Wheels of the Bravest. That's what got me curious in the first place. Thank you all again for the responses.

    Shop built engine

What ever became of Engine 324's shop built pumper? In 1939 Mayor Lauardia had the Shops build it's own pumper since the cost of new apparatus was getting out of hand. The finished product cost more than a manufactured rig. It was never repeated. Was the pumper ever reassigned after Eng 324; was...

    Eng 66

Thanks all. I believe the photo guitarman referred to was the same one I'd seen which caused me to ask this question.   Thanks, again.

    Eng 66

Did Engine 66 ever have one of those slime yellow 1981 Macks? Maybe a reassigned one? If so, when?

    1978 Mack CFs

fdce54,I went back over those other photos today and looked at them a little closer. It seems some of the angles they were taken at partially obscured some of those roof mounted speakers. I appreciate your info. Thanks again.   Ed

    1978 Mack CFs

Thanks fdce54. I worded my question incorrectly. I did see a couple of photos with the speaker on the roof, but the majority of them show nothing. The speaker in the photo of 48 engine looks like an after market add on as does the couple of others I've seen. All of the other ones show no speaker...

    1978 Mack CFs

In 1978 all of the engines and trucks delivered that year were equipped with electronic sirens. After looking at dozens of photos of '78 Mack pumpers and tower ladders, I can't see any speakers for the sirens. All of the Seagrave trucks that year had the speaker sticking right out in the front...

    Old Bronx 56th Btn.

Thanks for the info. After doing some checking, it was probably the summer of 1972, not 1971. It's been over forty years and the mind gets a bit foggy. I do remember that both sections of 27 were at 176th St. where the Battalion was and 46 Engine was in the new house at the X-Bronx. Thanks again.

    Old Bronx 56th Btn.

Would anyone happen to have the Units that made up the 56th Batt. prior to 1975. My late father was Batt. Chief in the 56th in the early 70s. I rode with him a couple of times during the Summer of 1971. He eventually went to the 18th. I'd appreciate any info on the make up. Thanks
