(New York- WABC, July 17, 2007) - Two women were struck by a tree that suddenly fell in Stuyvesant Square Park on the East Side Monday night.

The victims were struck when the large tree toppled onto them inside the park, on Second Avenue between East 15th and East 17th streets, at about 7:40 p.m.
One woman, 29-year-old Alexis Hanwerker, was with her beagle when she was hit by a 25-foot limb.

She was rushed to the hospital with rushed to the hospital with leg and arm injuries.

The other was brushed by falling branches.

"We just heard crackling noises, and I felt something hit my head," said Stacie Forman. "the next thing I knew I just heard branches and leaves falling down."

Forman quickly realized that her dog ran away in the chaos.

One witness said the small dog, named Baron, ran from the park during the commotion, was hit by a yellow taxi cab, and kept going.

Forman said she is now more concerned about her missing dog than her injures -- and spent the night searching for the pooch.

She said she rescued Baron from a shelter just nine months before.

Stuyvesant Square Park has a dog run in the in the southeast quadrant of the park.
