G'man - a few years ago we discussed why ladder 143 was a tiller - you pointed out the el (overhead subway) etc.  Do you think rearmounts that relocate to T143 leave the rig in front of the house or put it in quarters?

I believe they can fit a rearmount into those quarters. I have seen it done in the past with an 80's vintage Seagrave, like an 84 or 85. There are some pretty tight streets in the area of their quarters. I don't know what having an elevated subway line would have to do with apparatus.

There is no problem fitting a RM into a Tillers qtrs.....when i was in LAD*126 we relocated to 143 w/ our RM on occasion.......the "el" should have no bearing on the type of rig.....the streets in 143 s area are very tight as are some of 151s but they lost the tiller anyway a few years ago.....in my opion all Trucks except TLs should be Tillers......but ...especially the SOC Support Ladders as they could respond to any area of the City & would have more compartment space for special equiptment which is now carried on their RRV which is not w/them most times when they are out of Quarters.

Thanks for the input FDNY150 and 68jk09 - the streets are tight in both T143 and L151's areas as they are in lower aManhattan and parts of Greepoint and Williamsburgh

Haven't been there in a while but a few years ago they had a sign on the outside of quarters that no TL or Rearmounts were to park in quarters. We had to leave someone outside to watch the rig.

I have not been there since the FH Rally march from 293 to 294 earlier this year.....there was a large crowd & i did not notice the no RM sign.....which very well might be there now......the last time i relocated there was 12 years ago.....next time i am in Woodhaven i will take a closer look.......this may be due to the fact that RMs & TLs have less weight distribution .......a Tillers overall weight is spread out more.....i was thinking more of length rather than weight distribution.

Queens is down to one tiller, 173 lost theirs a number of years ago as well. I remember the old ALF that 173 had with the stars and stripes. I lived in HB for a number of years and shed a tear every time I saw 173 with a RM. One other thing, like both I and Chief JK brought up is the streets around those quarters. There are a few blocks over there where it would be very tough for 142 to make the block if 143 was unavailable.
