On the scene observations: Satellite 5 stretched the  6 inch supply line from Engine 159 which terminated in the manifold. However, I don't believe I saw more than one line coming off the manifold. Two aerial ladders and one tower ladders were also present in the front of the building but no master streams were used. All of the fire-fighting as far as I could tell was interior.

The fire building itself was a bit curious as there did not seem to be any fire stops in the attic which would have prevented the fire from spreading to all of the units. I have heard of this problem in commercial buildings but not residential buildings.  [ Correct me if I am wrong ]

These buildings have a ?mansard style??roof detail. Between the 1st and 2nd floors the ?eaves or soffit? of this mansard style detail are about 2 feet wide. From inside the building if you?re standing on the 2nd floor the bottom of the eave is slightly below floor level. The eave slopes up to a point at the 8 foot ceiling height of the 2nd floor. The eave does not appear to have any fire stopping in it. The heavy fire at rear of house from fully involved decks on multiple houses entered the eave and with the wind condition and the 2x4 construction ran the entire length of the building. The heavy fire in this eave then extended up into attic spaces bypassing the fire stops between buildings.
The large void created by the mansard style soffit created an ideal flue to rapidly extend the fire down the row.

Noticed 87?s rig  too. Gotta be one of the oldest spares in the pool.

Referring to the construction of these buildings, it is so common on SI and the south shore in particular. Has been the root of many devastating multiple alarms on that side of the island in recent years.

Very interesting about how that fire was able to spread so quickly. Any understanding on the cause of this... the news reports all put an "explosion" of some sort. I will say it's been a long time since I saw that many units from Manhattan relocated or seeing the action on SI. Not to mention Bat 51 from Queens coming in to cover the 21.

11 of the 12 SI trucks (83 relocated did not respond) and 16 of the 17 SI Engines saw this call (153 relocated with no response to the box).

87 with a spare from 2000!!!
Assume there is a very small spare pool for them given that the 2005/6 trucks would be the "newest" in that spare pool and there weren't that many of those.

^^^^ SHIT construction to start with exacerbated by heavy wind conditions seem to be the main issue at this Multiple....so many of these bldgs of matchbox construction have been built all around the Country .....profit before  Fire safety.

Anything built in '80s on SI are an issue.  Don't know if lack of DOB inspections, loopholes in codes or what, but not fire stopped well.  Many townhouses built then did not have firewall continue to roof line.  Mansard roof like this covers 8 buildings with no firebreak between building.  Intro to wood truss, which fortunately, did not stick around on SI pass this period.  Was a building boom, many townhouse developments on South Shore and a few on North Shore during this period.
Most new construction on SI, side and rear walls need to be sheetrock, not plywood, due to Fire Code, unless lot line is certain distance away.  When many of these were built, plywood was used on rear also (don't know if these particular ones were like that)

Add to that even in newer construction, back decks on each building, vinyl siding and gas lines or LBG tanks for bar-b ques on the back deck.

After late 80's firestop back to roof line or above, usually double sheetrock, which will hold.

There is a video from the neighbor in the rear.  Looks like it started outside.  The rear of the original fire bldg is fully involved.  Any you don't even hear any sirens yet.

Saw that too. A lot of fire early on. 164/84 are not quartered far away either, shows how fast this fire spread.

Cause of fire from Fire Marshal: DRYER VENT. smoke alarms not present in fire building.
