SECOND on old barb E75,43,79,48. L45,59
So E52&93 went to second alarm while E43&75 moved to first alarm

We can notice that there are three historical layers to the box assignment in the discussion of this box: the present computerized BARB system; the previous STARFIRE "air miles" system; the old manual map system of run cards.

The run cards were the bible of the FDNY assignments for a century. With the onslaught of the War Years,  flexibility was needed. The new STARFIRE computer program provided it. Somewhere along the line STARFIRE began to use the "as the crow flies" measurement (with an added "thumbs in the pie" favoritism aspect), which yielded some messed up box assignments. It appears BARB more likely replicates the old time tested map system. (See BARB vs CARD on this box and many others.)

Imagine that...those old run card guys had it right all along.

I would like to see some more discussion on the pros & cons of the present barb system.....rather than hijack this thread i will start a new one  in the Communications/Technology Forum& see if it takes off.

some units, including battalions, made out very well with the new BARB and some lost some "good" boxes.  It's up to the company officers to fight for their boxes by submitting the proper form to communications...some they switch back and some they don't

True enginecap, and other units just salute and accept their assignments like good soldiers.

They all would rather be 1st or 3rd due though. ..rather have the nozzle than just help with the stretch.
