A little history on this area & South of it ...back before 173 was organized & 107 moved from New Jersey & Jamaica Av's to Linden Blvd & Lincoln Av in 1970 when 175 was organized there..... 143 from Jamaica Av & 101 St was Second Due down to 165 Av ....back then there was a small bridge over the canal on 165 Av @ Crossbay Blvd that allowed access to the area ..today the bridge is gone & Units have to enter from the 157 Av end only to access the "old side".... this side of Crossbay Blvd (East side) now known as "the old side" was occupied....the West side now fully built up & known as the "new side" was just a few farm houses & some factories back then ....for 143 a long cold ride on an open Rig in the Winter .

Yes JK you are right, Old Howard and New Howard, also you have Lindenwood which is accessed from 157 ave as well just further down on opposite side. The bridge you are referring to connected new and old howard from cross bay to the area by charles park in old howard.

There was also a second wooden draw bridge on 165 Ave. & 99 St. to West Hamilton Beach. There was also a community called East Hamilton Beach across the tracks accessible from Lefferts Blvd. That whole community was razed for the extension of JFK airport.
