Not to be picky, but is that address correct, 50 Amsterdam ave? Amsterdam starts way down in Chelsey. Wouldn't the number be much greater than 50 by Midtown?

Maybe 50, W 61St, just off Amsterdam Ave?

Power Memorial Academy was at 161 W 61st St.

Tenth Ave. starts in Chelsea and ends at 59th St. with house numbers in the 890's.  Amsterdam Ave. starts from #1 at 59th St.  ;)

Thank you, Mr. Postman. Spent a large part of my life on Amsterdam Ave and always thought it was interchangeable with 10th Ave, like 6th Ave and the Avenue of the Americas.

Learn somethin' new every day. And just when i thought i knew it all...like when i was 16.

Jor,

That #40 would be the "front" door to the school, which the students rarely used. If you did you had to tip-toe by the principals office. Not a good idea. The side and back doors kept them out of the line of fire.

That the #40 was never used in my time points to my ignorance on the 10th vs Amsterdam Ave discussion. Had it been used I might have figured out the difference as the number was so low for a Midtown address. (But then maybe not...my brain was occupied by other, mostly sweeter, things as a teenager.)

I did wonder why, if the front door was on Amsterdam,  the official address was on 61st Street. Figured that one out a few years ago when I saw a picture of the children's hospital that preceded the school in the building. There was no entrance on Amsterdam back then and I guess when the school took over in the 1930"s. The main entrance was on 61st Street and remained the official address.

Jor, were you around when they busted the door out onto Amsterdam?

I was a Freshman  Sept 1955 front door was used also especially if you had to use the John as it was just up a few steps and just on the right before the Cafeteria just pass the Principals and Bursors offices.I know that 98% of the time the entrance between the Gym and the building was used as it entered on the floor above the cafeteria.
