Firefighter Seriously Hurt Battling Blaze in the Bronx

A firefighter fell while battling a Bronx apartment fire that criticallyburned one man and forced others to fire escapes.

The blaze broke out inside a six-story apartment building on Sedgwick Avenue just after 4 a.m. Thursday.

Firefighters found one man critically burned when they arrived.

Rushing up the stairs, officials say one firefighter fell through a stairwell from the third to second floors.

The 40-year-old firefighter was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital to be treated.

He is listed as serious condition, as doctors conduct further tests. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The male resident who was injured is in critical condition. He was burned to his hands and face and also suffered smoke inhalation.

Other residents were being treated at the scene.

Firefighters were forced to make numerous rescues, helping women and young children on fire escapes.

The residents will not be able to return home because officials say the stairwell in the apartment building is compromised

Normal response used to be E43, E42, E75, L59, TL33, BC19 but with E75/L33 moving south to their new house I believe E75 gets in before E42. ;)

BC19 gave a mixer off, in which during that message a 10-75 was transmitted. Rescue 3 was then ordered to bring in a stokes basket for a partial stairway collapse on the 3rd floor & that the stokes was for a member. EMS requested multiple times, lots of mixer off messages given with BC18 special called along with Safety BC & marshals. Fire was on the 3rd & 4th floors + bulkhead (Fire believed to be in the stairwell).
