H&L 84, located in Huguenot, on a narrow street called Carlton Avenue, used to be 1st or 2nd due, to Tottenville, up to Great  Kills, almost to Travis, from the 1930s up to 1960, when Ladder 85 and Ladder 86 were organized.  That's about a third of SI.  Their boxes, Engine 164's too, covered an immense area around the house watch desk. Runs were 5 or 6 miles, no highways, potholes, unmarked streets, dirt roads, un-numbered houses, dummy boxes across acres of partially-built roads, miles of shoreline, marinas, shipyards and acres of landfill.

Cant even imagine. Even today they have a large response area, 164/84. Really any job on the entire south shore of SI, either 1st, 2nd or FAST- 84 would be on the box. Some of their 2nd due runs into Tottenville, with 76 Truck first due, are long.

Back then there were many areas with few hydrants and remember, the first booster tank equipped pumpers on S.I. were the 1946 Ward LaFrances assigned to E158 & E159 so there was a lot of hose stretched.
