11/25/13 Manhattan 10-77 Box 906

Notice that on a full 5th alarm assignment only three companies crossed any bridges to help out. A provincial attitude still prevailed prior to the War Years that each borough would more or less take care of itself. This was a hold over from the days when there were separate Brooklyn and Long Island City Fire Departments. (The exception was Bronx/Manhattan, which had always been considered the same department.) That attitude withered away with the onslaught of the War Years.
