23rd is getting busy again:)

surprised 168 goes there before 164

Those were my two thoughts when reading this. I thought 164 would beat 168 in.

Having first hand experience, I can tell you without hesitation that E168 is second due at that box.

Mapquest has E 168 second due, too.

E 167 is clearly 1st due.
E 168 in Rossville has a run up Arthur Kill Rd of about 2.26 miles.
E 164 in Huguenot can use the Parkway and is about 3.16 miles away.
E 162 is 3.38 miles away in Great Kills.
SI traffic is another factor, though.

When I first moved to SI, E 164 would have been 1st due here using the Old Drumgoole Blvd.  E 162 would arrive 2nd due. Then maybe E 159, E 151 or E 163.  E 165, E 166, E 167 and E 168 did not exist.  E 164 had a hugh response area. Then again, there was no 22 Don Court back then.  It would have been brush or maybe St Michael's Home which used to be on Arthur Kill Rd.

St Michael's Home had more than a few fires.  It was closed in the late 1970s.  Now it is the site of a church but this is what the place looked like:

This is to add some nearby SI history to this box location.  Al Deppe Corner used to be the famous intersection of the Old Drumgoole Blvd, Arthur Kill Rd and Richmond Ave.  There was another intersection of Drumgoole Blvd and Arthur Kill Rd near the Outerbridge Crossing into NJ (near Tottenville) which used to cause a lot of confusion for Manhattan and Bklyn units operating on SI for brush.

Al Deppe's restaurant had a large hot dog on the roof.  There was a playland, arcade, rides for kids.  He used to have a merry go round and a live fire range.  Al Deppe owned the large mansion accross the street.  He had a tunnel built under the road so he could walk across to his restaurant without crossing the street.  The mansion became an Elks Club. There was also a minature golf, gas station and eventually a pizza place (good pizza - I think the name was Val's).  The old SI airport, was a short distance down Richmond Avenue located with a farmers market and the SI drive in.  Landfill areas were located along Arthur Kill Rd and the infamous SI landfill mountains had not been created.  You could ride a bike along Drumgoole Blvd or Arthur Kill Road for miles in the middle of summer days and not see a car.

Thanks Mack for the history lesson - you never know these threads are going to evolve sometimes. Al Deppe's looked like it was a great place - got to love those old cars too!
