1,461 unit complex built in 1937, formerly known as the Hillside Homes. Very similar to Parkcehester or Vandeer/Flatbush Gardens. Became a disaster in the late 70's and 80's. Today is well maintained and mostly quiet except for a few street corners.

Not to be confused with Eastchester Gardens, which is a NYCHA complex a few blocks away. AKA the Burke Avenue Houses.

Is that across from the firehouse where the cop was killed years ago?

Yes. Right across the street in the Eastchester Heights complex. Firehouse is 3446 Eastchester Rd.

Police Officer Hector Fontanez-Diaz was shot and killed after he chased an armed suspect into an alley adjacent to 3457-59 Eastchester Road shortly after 2:00 pm. The suspect had been seen in the area riding a bicycle and waving a gun.

Officer Fontanez was able to return fire and shot the subject five times.

The 18-year-old suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. He will be eligible for parole in 2016.

Officer Fontanez had served with the New York City Police Department for five years and was assigned to the 47th Precinct. He was survived by his mother and brother.

Even better info. Thirty years since that young man went down. Think of all the life he missed over those years. Wonder if the perp got his parole in 2016.
