This box is far from most companies on the south shore, southernmost tip of the island, a hike for companies such as 167/87 which were 4th due and FAST, you can imagine the trip for Rescue and Squad! Tottenville boys catchin some work I see  ;)

27 miles for Squad 18.

28 miles for Rescue 2.

Look at this job. After the second alarm was transmitted I have to assume Eng 159 responded with Sat. # 5. So the only engine companies in service south of the SIE are Engines 160 & 161. Interesting!!!!

SI continues to grow rapidly - about 25K-40K every 10 years - new housing - traffic.  With minimal FDNY increases.  Still only 3 battalions, no squad, limited West Shore ladder companies.  Many of the new South Shore housing developments are large homes which will require multiple alarms for working fires.  Response from Brooklyn and other boros will only continue to slow down with additional traffic.  SI could use another firehouse (engine maybe squad, battalion) vicinity of SI mall (new Springfield). Pleasant Plains firehouse (long run for E 164/L 84).  Engine 156/L 79/Bn 22 are candidates for new firehouse.  E 168 and E 158 will eventually need truck companies in quarters.

There is no depth of fire coverage on SI.  Two simultaneous multiples are major problem.

SI firehouse locations:

- All three West Shore firehouses are single engines only - E 158, E 154, E 168 - long runs for truck companies
- Same number of SI battalions since 1930 - population has tripled
- Large center area (Heartland Village) vic SI Mall has no near-by fire units
- E 151/L 76 and E 164/L 84 have large response areas - long runs to neighbors along Amboy Road and Hylan Blvd in Annadale-Huguenot- Princess Bay-Pleasant Plains
