It's probably appropriate to remember that less than 24 hours prior to the Stockyard disaster, the Philadelphia Fire Department lost 13 members (plus one PPD officer) at Box 294 3rd Street and Girard Avenue at 9:00 pm on December 21, 1910. This was for a fire in the basement of the Friedlander Leather Remnants Company at 1116-20 Burdine Street. Most hydrants nearby were frozen and a second alarm was struck out at 9:26. Then the front wall and roof collapsed. Also, 33 members were injured.
At that time, a PFD widow received $20 per month and each child under age 14 got $6/month from the Police and Fireman's Pension Fund.
