I can remember when an all hands came over the bells the units assigned on the second alarm would gather on the apparatus floor so they were ready to respond when and if the second was transmitted. Recently, they have been using relocators so some companies that would have been assigned remain in quarters. Very often we would hear the battalion or deputy transmit a second over the radio and we would be out the door before the bells rang.

I wonder if that is still in the books. Might have been the Communications manual.
Assigning the relocating company would depend on their 10-10, if 10-8 in the response area of unit they’re going to. It seems that relocating companies, not always, are coming from quite a distance.
No company is “safe” anymore, no matter how “busy” they are.
The old response/assignment cards are out like the bells.
