Fire 1st floor of a 6 story MD

08:27: Bn-35 - 10-77

08:29: Bn-35 - Fire darkening down, primaries negative, doubtful

08:34: Bn-35 - Secondaries negative, PWH, 10-2 units on the 10-77

10-77:
E-229 CFRD, 235 HRN off 216, 3 w/ HR1 (Vent Support)
L-146
Bn-37, 38 safety
FC, RB, SB

Isn't it the height of the building rather than the number of floors that determines hi-rise (i.e. 10-77) or not?
Can't tell how tall this building is, but maybe it does qualify as a "hi-rise". Back in the 70's and 80's I was a Fire Safety Director for a Wall Street area building which while only 8 stories tall met the height definition of a hi-rise

I was wondering the same thing myself. Brooklyn Dispatcher asked Bn-35 why a 10-77 for a 6 story he said due to the number of apartments.

Engine 211 / Tower Ladder 119 First Due

Probably: E211, E216, E230, E229, E235
              T119, L102, L104, L108F, T146
              RS02, SQ01
              Bn. 35, 31, 37, 38
              E003 w/ HR1
              FC, SB, RB

*Engine 221 should be in the mix somewhere but with E235 and E229 on HRN and CFRD, I wasn't sure*

High rise building is based on the height above grade. If the building is 75 ft or more above grade then considered a high rise. That's why most buildings get away with an extra floor but having the first floor below grade.

i am pretty sure of two things right now....the Bn had a good reason for making it a 10-77 and everyone else had a good laugh when they showed up

Why would they have a good laugh?? Maybe they had a smoke condition all the way up requiring the 10-77 response which brings the vent support group..I wouldn't monday morning quarterback if you weren't there.

fires on the 1st floor of a six story do not require  10-77...the signal was intended for FPHR MD's.....we don't use it for 6 story FP md's (low rise projects) either and def don't use it for 6 story NFP.....so, companies turn around and go home....no big deal.

Iam.on the job (fdny) the 10-77  can absolutely be used for a fire in a 6 story building no matter where tje fire isda Da

think about all the different units coming in on the 10-77 and explain why you would need them for a fire on the first floor of a 6 story nfp.  With all of you years experience on the job you should have no problem explaining why we need an engine company with a high rise nozzle or a vent unit for an MD with open interior stairs.  We take a bunch of companies and BC's out of their first due areas for 10 77's and rarely are they used.  it's the nature of the job now....
