L 36 was 2nd due on that box & L27 use to be 3rd due. The assignment was 75, 43, 48, 42. 95, 46. Since then Eng 75, 46, & 48 have all moved.

This address sounded familiar to me. Just a few doors up the street is a handsome old building that once housed the Fitch Sanitarium, the hospital where I was born. (My brothers used to tease me that I was born in a "sanitarium", confusing it with "asylum" I guess.) It was built in the early 1920s but the hospital itself had a history going back to the mid 19th century. It closed for good in 1962 and was sold for use as a dormitory by NYU before they abandoned their beautiful Bronx campus. (Big mistake!) I'm told it's senior citizen housing today. It was interesting to drive past it a few years ago for the first time, knowing that's where I was launched.

18 years after my launch date I visited the NYU campus to interview with the head track coach for a possible athletic scholarship. I mentioned the event to my father later that evening and he nodded and said, "Sure, Joe Healy". (Fathers back then seemed to know everybody.) He explained that Mr Healy was a brother firefighter in his 18th battalion at Engine 48. One day riding the back step, the next day a honcho at a major university. Talented men. I never knew if Healy knew whose kid I was or if the two had spoken about my interview. You just didn't ask questions like that of the adults. And yes, I was offered the scholarship but I didn't go to NYU.
