I wonder if the truck itself had some kind of failure.  We always have the truck operator open the bag and dump the load on the street.  They use the same method to dump the load when they get to the landfill.

Looks like there was a hydraulic problem preventing the dumping of the load ..... near the end of the video when the hydraulic fluid sprayed out over the area this was a result of the loader forcing the the hopper up without the fluid having a place to release other than rupture the line & spray out.....NYC Sanitation Trucks used to (& may still) have an inlet on the center of the roof that allows a 2 1/2 inch line to be connected (with the proper simple fittings) to allow the interior to be flooded....the procedure  to hook up to it also was outlined in an older WNYF article.

I know its been done before, but it would be interesting if WNYF did a feature article on this particular job.  I'd be surprised if NFPA, OSHA, NIST or many of the other Fed agencies don't have a requirement for a roof inlet that the Chief mentioned.  This can't be the first time a fire of this kind has occurred.

And for our overseas members - what protocols does your department have for these incidents?
