Location: JFK Airport, Building 14 - off Federal Circle
Fire on the 3rd floor of a 3 story 300x300 airport facility (Port Authority Maintenance Building).
1020 - E-302 - Port Authority is advising that they have a smoke condition on the 3rd floor.
1025 - Bn. 51 - Using 2x2. We have a smoke condition in a battery room in the rear of the building. Start out Haz-Mat please, we are awaiting Port Authority to gain access to the room.
1032 - Bn. 51 - At this time we are purging the room, then we will enter the room to check for extension.
1050 - Bn. 51 - All Hands - No additional units needed except Haz-Mat. Engines are stretching a precautionary line, trucks are checking for extension. The batteries were "Red Acid" batteries, the FM200 Halon system was discharged. There are no injuries.
1052 - HMB - Have all units withhold applying water to the fire.
1057 - Div. 13 - We had an explosion of several batteries. The fire is extinguished. DWH
1104 - Div. 13 - Haz Mat companies are in the affected area. There are still sparks coming from the batteries. We have Purple K extinguishers in position as a precaution. DWH
1129 - Div. 13 - FD units are standing by outside of the affected area. Port Authority is de-energizing the battery bank. Primaries are complete and negative, secondaries in progress.
1135 - Div. 13 - Power has been removed from the battery room. FD units are working with Port Authority to ventilate the smoke. Secondaries are still in progress. DWH
1141 - Div. 13 - Start out an extra Engine and Truck for relief (E-331, L-133).
1144 - Div. 13 - Secondaries are complete and negative. PWH - Duration 1 hour 29 minutes.
1208 - Div. 13 - Under Control - Duration 1 hour 54 minutes.
