Disabled train in the tunnel between Queens and Manhattan.

Initial reports of a train that is smoking in the tunnel.

1013 - Bn. 8 - We used All Hands - PWH for a disabled train in the south bound tunnel between Queens and Manhattan.  550 passengers were evacuated to a Rescue Train and transported to Grand Central Terminal.  No special units are required.

1022 - Div. 3 - All people have been removed from the Rescue Train.  Under Control - Duration 1 hour 4 minutes.

As far as I know, there is no "south bound tunnel" (1013 - Bn. 8 - We used All Hands - PWH for a disabled train in the south  line); it would be east - west.

your right, the tunnel runs east and west BUT in the tunnel is two tracks, one for westbound trains and on for eastbound trains. He was referring to the the track on the down town side which would be the south track.

I understood from a friend in Transit that any train headed towards Manhattan is Northbound and any train going away from Manhattan is Southbound in their lingo regardless of what train route it is.

This Northbound/Southbound designation has been used in past FDNY promotional exam questions.....in the underground subway system after some turns walking down the stairs or an escalator you sometime lose direction but above ground where you can orient N S E W easier it is strange especially where an el line crosses a bridge that goes East to West but that is the way the designation's are used (North or Southbound) .
