In the 80’s at the castle. They put the drivers side outrigger on a wall and the truck tipped over. Go look up “Jon Malkin” Gettin salty episode. He goes over this incident in pretty good detail. His best line was “these things come with instructions, you should read them”
They also had a few guy on GSE who talk about this but I cannot remember their names

"The Castle" is 1950 Andrews Avenue. A very large 7 wing Class 3 MD. The front doors of 6/7 wings are only accessible via an interior courtyard. It was vacant for many years. Reliable estimates say there were well over 100 significant fires there in the 70's and 80's.

I was told TL-44 had leaned the inside tormentor against a wall, instead of fully extending it to the pavement. It was an "Icy Night", and the movement of the Tower ladder basket caused the other tormentors to slip on the ice below until the center of gravity changed, and the Tower Ladder tipped over. I believe that people were reported trapped, and TL-44 did what they had to do to try to reach the trapped civilians.
I have taught Tower Ladder tactics at times, and I use a copy of this photo of TL-44 to emphases the need to fully extend and lock down Tower Ladder/Snorkel/Aerial stabilizers if it is at all possible. I spent 02 years of my time in the FDNY working as a firefighter and fire officer in very busy FDNY Tower Ladders. These apparatuses are designed to have every stabilizer down and locked in place.
But when people are trapped you, sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Don't place a 68,00 L.B.S. TL onto of anything that won't hold the weight. SEE SOME PHOTOS BELOW. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired.
