WOW, guys for the past 3 days I have never seen the amount of damage water can cause and how quickly it DOES rise. This was a first in my 14 years on the job. Over the 56 hours I and the rest of my Station (22) responded to 427 Emergency Runs and unknown number of public assist. No working fires, all dumb asses driving in high water, Special Needs civilians that needed relocation, numerous Haz-Mat Boxes, floating propane tanks and loaded trailers on the Interstate's. Was very very interesting. The Tennessean.com has tons of pics posted on their site.
Brother's, going to sleep.... for a long time (hopefully), NO "honey can we....", I am done.
All be safe. Rob

Rob, recently here in Southeast Connecticut, we were hit with some heavy flooding. It broke all records. Buildings in the area recieved heavy damage. Some medical calls in my home town had to be made with a Zodiac Boat, and several motorist were rescued from their own cars when they tried to go through what they thought were puddles.
A Battalion Chief was assigned as a liason officer between the Police/fire dispatch center and he assigned the companies to the calls. I think the fire dept answered about 800 calls in three days, for a city of about 40,000 people. (Norwich, Ct). Similiar conditions existed in some of the other cities and towns in the area. Johnd248, Bxboro, and Ratpack, are from the Groton, New London area and they faced very similiar conditions.
You are very correct in that we never expect water flooding to tax the fire dept in such a way. Here we were very lucky that there were no fatalities. I know over the years, the FDNY has certainly had their own share of flooding incidents over the years. But as you can probadly guess, the problems are just compounded in a City like New York with its major traffic problems, and underground subways.
Flooding isn't fighting fires, but there sure are a number of people needing help. And those guys on the job will usually get a good work out without wearing an air pack.
