Recently I happened to meet up with this site owner, Lt Tommy Bendick. In general conversation we got talking about the online radio system that he provides for us (at no cost) of the FDNY etc. It's the way all of us keep track of whats going on no matter where we are, when we want to listen. Sometimes it has a few problems. Some guys pay for the aps and it still may not work.
I can tell you that Lt Bendick gets NO ROYALITY FEEs from those providing this aps service. In fact it actually cost him money to provide it for us. He showed me a new board which he just got with some electronic equipment on it for his new server. I'm sure that wasn't FREE.
I also learned that he now keeps this very expensive equipment no longer at just one location, BUT actually TWO separate locations.
I guess my point is that he provides this service to us, paying for it out of his own pocket. Plus the amount of his own time that is put into this to make it work.
I guess he does it for us because he enjoys doing it. I don't know if I would feel the same way about it.
The point is that sometimes things go wrong that might be out of his control. He maintains his system quite well.
Did he ask me to write this, "Absolutely NOT". I just felt it was important for all of us to try to understand the expense and the amount of effort that goes into this. And many times it is beyond his control if things happen.
