What exactly is a "light train"?  Is it the next regular service train on that line to come up and illuminate the area of concern, or is it a special/dedicated piece of equipment...or something in between?

A light train is a train that the Transit Authority makes available to the  FDNY to access fires or emergencies in between stations.
It is a regular train with no passengers.  Just a conductor and motorman.  Empty train pulls into station, picks up firemen and takes them to location of incident.
