Fire on the 5th floor of a 5 story 200x100 irregular MD.

1014 - Bn. 17 - Transmit the 10-75. Unknown location of fire.

TL-45 FAST  -  E-42 4th Engine

1018 - Bn. 17 - Transmit a 2nd Alarm. Fire in the cockloft.

1020 - Bn. 17 - We have fire in Apt. 5E on the top floor with extension to the cockloft.  1 L/S/O

1027 - Bn. 17 - 2 L/S/O. 

1030 - Div. 6 - Transmit the 3rd Alarm. It will be a few minutes before I get back to you with details. (Staging at Jerome and Shakespeare)

1037 - Div. 6 - We have fire on the 4th and 5th floors and into the cockloft.  3 L/S/O, trucks opening up.

1039 - Div. 6 - MBFKD, trucks checking for extension, primaries in progress throughout.  DWH

1045 - Div. 6 - 4 L/S/O, searches still underway.

1056 - FC per Div. 6 - Primaries are negative throughout, secondaries negative on the 5th floor.  PWH - Duration 48 minutes.

1113 - FC - Secondaries are complete and negative.  Under Control - Duration 1 hour 5 minutes.

what is the purpose of the forth engine,  I know that is the normal response  but why is it announced on the matrix/ call.

First and Second Due Engine put the first line in place. Third and Fourth put the second line in place. There's only three guys on the back step. Especially since this was a top floor fire so that's quite a bit of hose to get to the top floor.

When the initial units are assigned, the ticket for the incident only lists those initial companies (3 Engines, 2 Trucks, & a Battalion).  Upon transmission of the 10-75, the dispatcher reads out all additional units assigned because the Battalion still only has the original ticket. 

As a buff, the announcement of the 4th Engine is usually the first Engine that is confirmed. This is very helpful in having an accurate rundown of an incident.
