If Exp. 2 and 4 are alleyways, what the heck are the buildings beyond those points = Exp. 2A and 4A??
There has to be a education program somewhere for people who talk on radios. Without a map to reference, how does a staff chief follow the operation from his office with such inaccurate progress report information?
The other peeve is the never ending "going down to an 18"

If exposure 2 is an alley, meaning the next building is not attached to the fire building then yes the next building would be 2A. Just like a church fire in lower Manhattan not to long ago a company came in and was told to check for any extension in 1A. The church front steps are in the front of the building which makes the street exposure 1. Across the street is exposure 1A. The fire was blowing out the front round stained glass window area that the chief wanted the building across the street checked. From 1A or 2A you keep going on with B then C then D etc.

Normally In the FDNY a Building is considered an Exposure if it is LESS than < 25 ft from the fire building. An alleyway is not truly and exposure in the FDNY, the building separated by a 12 ft Alley = Less than 25 ft. IS an exposure. Exposure 4=A would be the building on the Right side of the fire building, beyond the exposure 4 =D =Right side, of the fire building. The only time an exposure is greater than 25 feet from the fire building IS AN EXPOSURE is when the fire is of such magnitude that fire can extend to due to a significant radiant heat exposure. I retired a few years ago but I still think this is true. Below a famous photograph I think taken by the late John Gill, an F.B.I. agent who was a great man and buff in FDNY Rescue 1. The fire is a 11 Alarm fire in a vacant factory, that later collapsed and destroyed the firehouse of Rescue 1. Talk about exposure problem. FDNY 8th Alarm on W. 43 St. R-1 Qtrs..jpg
