First floor occupants were awoken by the smoke detector and quickly discovered the rear kitchen was on fire.  They escaped unharmed and called 911.  Firefighters arrived within minutes and found the entire back of the house engulfed in flames.  Fire was quickly spreading to the second floor and crews knocked down the fire before it could reach the surrounding homes in the Hall Place neighborhood.  Crews controlled the fire within the first hour but were confronted with heavy fire conditions and extension into surrounding bedrooms, second floor and attic.  This is yet another example of the importance of having smoke detectors in the home and making sure they work.
