On this date LtCol James Doolittle led a force of 16 B-25 bombers from the deck of the USS Hornet to bomb the Japanese capital of Tokyo. Although the raid cause minor damage it convinced them that their homeland was not safe from attack. They then drew up plans to attack and occupy the island of Midway and we all know how that ended.
