I understand the 10-75 battalion chief is the initial IC and the 2nd arriving battalion goes to the fire floor (unless the first BC is ABC). Then after arrival of the Deputy, the deputy assumes command.
My question is this: On initial dispatch of say, smoke in the building, when a 3 eng, 2 lad, 1 bc responds, does the battalion usually go to the floor of the reported smoke (example 8th floor) initially, or will he stay in the street and let the engine & ladder officers go to the location and report back? When I hear a battalion state, “Used 1&2 for a 10-26 in apartment 8-G, no extension, we’re 10-8”, has the chief appeared on the floor in question?
I only ask because I worked in a residential area (3 stories max) and the Chief would usually go to the floor in question initially. I realize there are no absolutes, I’m just asking in general terms what is practiced.
