We were dispatched to the pier for a person in distress in the water. We arrived on scene and there were numerous civilians directing us to the location of the victim. We saw a individual struggling to stay afloat and totally exhausted, we sent Firefighter James Larstanna and Firefighter Daniel Stroh into the water as the rescue swimmers. They donned in their cold-water rescue suits and used our rescue surfboard to quickly make their way to the individual. We were able to bring the victim to shore and EMS was able to begin life-saving interventions. It is so important that we are prepared for these water rescues not only in the summer months but also when temperatures begin to cool. The constant training we do on this discipline allows us to be ready for water rescues all year round,” said #FDNY Lieutenant Brian Mollica of Ladder 161 on a water rescue in Coney Island earlier this week.
