Its probaly not a coincidence but the first few cold days of the year and the red devil appears.
 
Yeh, I Really Thought it was gettin' sort'a Busy [!].  ;)

As soon as folks Start-Up da' Furnace  or da' Boiler to Heat Buildings; Wham !

Wait until January when it gets colder and they start up them space heaters with 99 cent store bought extension cords or turn on stoves and ovens for heat. ::)

Gman the sad part is that it's true, especially in poorer neighborhoods. these cheap supers dont care about quality of life and dont give heat just wanting to line their pockets. good thing i live in a building thats not the best building or in greatest of areas(crime isnt the issue) but there is ample heat during the winter that i need to open a window even when its 12 degrees out.

Absolutely.  I've lived my entire life in this city and have never understood why the politicians absolutely refuse to address this problem and keep their heads turned until they can get camera coverage decrying the loss of life in the most recent fire.

Yes the heat issue in some NYC bldgs is definitely "feast or famine" some bldgs you live in are blasting & others are underwarmed ...a hot steam steam filled radiator is always the best though..... even w/the knocking pipes....elect space heaters & overloaded wiring is a big problem as well as candles ....Religious or not especially in places w/pets  or small children.....back in the '50s kerosine heaters (or one armed bandits) were deadly then they were outlawed in NYC & slowly i guess as the old ones wore out they mostly disapeared.....then during one of the fuel crisis's back around the '80s they started to re appear not just in the tenement bldgs but in some more expensive digs....at least they were a little safer than the originals as far as design & balance but they still required fuel inside & although still illegal resulted in many serious Fires as well as carbon monoxide incidents  still today they can be sold in NYC as long as they are empty & the wick has never been lit BUT they are not supposed to be used in NYC
 
I was thinking the same thing, November started off to be a very busy month for the city - a remarkable amount of multiple alarms on a daily basis for a little while! Every borough has been contributing - from the always so busy Brooklyn and Bronx to the normally slow Staten Island.

They don't say the winter is the busiest time of year for nothin!

Hoping all the brothers are staying safe throughout it all.
 
I remeber one night a few years ago around the time the plane crash landed in the hudson, I was at a friends apartment no heat, it was about 12 degrees outside. 3 straight days of temps way below freezing.  Her apartment was a icebox to the point when you breathed out you were able to see the condensation from your breath.

"THE NORMALLY SLOW STATEN ISLAND???" ------ if you watch this page or keep up with the news,,, its safe to say the north shore of staten island is not as slow as people think.  South shore gets its fair share of work as well.  if you look at fdnewyork.com and look at the number of all hands,  certain staten island companies are catching as much work as other "busy" companies

Oh I know believe me, lol the north shore is fairly busy as always...but for the most part the borough is slower than the rest of the city. The south shore does have it's busy spurts sometimes as well.
Not only living on the south shore, but reading these threads it's clear to see that Staten Island can go days without seeing a job - not knocking the borough in any way, SI born and raised over here - many great guys and houses over here... But the nature of the island is not as busy with jobs as the other boroughs. Yes,  Si1075, just like other boroughs, SI has it's busy areas and houses... To see a couple of jobs in the borough in only a 3 day period is not normal for the borough. Not a better feeling than seeing or hearing a job on the good old island!
 
We're in a drought with brush fires popping up in the suburbs so Staten Island should be getting some of their own soon. ;)
 
Ahhhh yes, the almighty brush fire... Dry conditions and high winds = no good! Great Kills park will be seeing some gman, you got that right.
 
November, 2013 continues to be a very busy month for the FDNY as the multiple alarm fires continue to add up.
