"At 11:19PM on Thursday July 4th, the East Rockaway Fire Department was alerted for an attached garage fire on Adams Street. Chief of Department Vesce, Assistant Chiefs Pignataro and Bristol, and Engine 404 were on scene within 2 minutes of dispatch as they had just cleared from a garbage can fire in Bay Park. Met with heavy fire in the attached garage, Chief Vesce transmitted the Signal 10 (Working Fire) as Engine 404 initiated fire attack. Ladder 403 arrived shortly after in addition to Assistant Chief Gelb, Engine 405, Engine 406, and Ambulance 4081.
Members were faced with a well-advanced fire in the front foyer and attic. Due to rapidly changing conditions in the attic as the fire spread, all members were pulled from the structure to re-evaluate tactics and ensure crew safety. Additional truck companies were requested to the scene to assist with “opening up” the walls and perform overhaul to ensure complete extinguishment.
