Captain Herlihy was overcome by smoke on December 24, 1954, and later died on January 1, 1955.
Captain Thomas Herlihy of Ladder 167 was overcome by smoke at Box 6909 [Northern Boulevard and Auburndale Road, Queens on December 24, 1954]. At first his death was not considered in the line of duty but on February 9, 1956 the Board of Trustees of the Fire Department Pension Fund determined that it was a Line of Duty Death. He was appointed to the Department on June 1, 1913, promoted to Lieutenant on March 16, 1926 and Captain on December 25, 1934. He served as a Lieutenant of Ladder 167 from 1931 until promoted in 1934. He returned to Ladder 167 on April 1, 1939. He was sixty-seven years old and was born in Ireland.
