Engineer John A. Callaghan, 50
Engine 253
FDNY. New York
Engineer Callaghan died after suffering a heart attack while operating at a fire.
Engineer of Steamer John A. Callaghan dropped dead from heart disease shortly after 8 o’clock Christmas night while in attendance at a fire on the Salt Meadows between Bensonhurst and Coney Island. Callaghan was the Engineer of Engine 53 (now Engine 253) and was standing beside the engine in the roadway, when he collapsed. Other firemen seeing him go down rushed to his aid and carried him into the house of Aaron Smith, where he expired in a few minutes. He was fifty years old and lived at 52 19th Street with his wife and six children. (from "The Last Alarm" by Boucher, Urbanowicz & Melahn, 2007)
RIP. Never forget.
