Fireman Walsh died as a result of injuries sustained while operating at an alarm on March 29, 1896.

While attempting to perform a rescue from a ladder, the ladder sprung in the middle causing FF Walsh to fall backward. He landed on his head and knees, broke both kneecaps and spine. He was one of the most popular as well as one of the bravest men in the service.

Firehouse is still there, now a private residence that renovated the joint beautifully. The Esso gas station property is now used by the NYPD Bomb Squad. The patch was designed by yours truly. Sitting behind the front wheel while the members were performing building inspection on 14th St (1996ish) I noticed a Harley Davidson sign with the bird. Back then, with no easy access to computer graphics to pull up a cool looking Phoenix, the company motto, I hand drew this one. And that became the focus of our patch. The patch above is a knock-off, I used FDNY instead of FIRE.

102 Charles St today. By the way, L 5 was the only ladder company assigned to the great Baltimore fire, unfortunately the rig never made it off the train in Baltimore, it broke down.

Was Edward Walsh a Fireman or the Foreman (Captain)? 29 would be young for Captain, but not unheard of in those days.
