Brooklyn Fire Dept Line of Duty Death (became FDNY 1898)
November 23, 1896 - LODD
Fireman Hugh Fox, 35
Ladder 2 (became FDNY Ladder 102)
FDNY. Brooklyn O’Donnell, New York
Fireman Fox slipped from a step and was run over by the heavy vehicle as it left the firehouse on Bedford Avenue near Myrtle about 11:15 at night. The rear wheels passed over his body, crushing his ribs and causing internal injuries. There was no time for the truck to stop to allow the men to pick up their comrade. "Duty is above life with a fireman as it is with a soldier and the hook and ladder rattled away to its destination while Fox's companions could only look back to see their comrade lying on the sidewalk." He died in the hospital at 3:00 in the morning.
RIP. Never forget.
