Fireman Wellington Hackett, 27
Engine 13
FDNY. Manhattan, New York
Fireman Hackett was crushed between the fire engine and a bus that had side-swiped the truck at Lafayette Street and Prince Street. Both vehicles tried not to collide with one another, but the bus struck the left side of the engine, crushing Fireman Hackett, who was on the outer edge of the rear step.
Fireman Wellington Hackett, twenty-seven years old, was crushed between the fire engine and a bus that had side-swiped the truck at Lafayette Street and Prince Street. The bus on Prince Street had the green light and was crossing Lafayette Street when Engine 13 entered the intersection. The driver of Engine 13 tried missing the bus, as did the bus driver try missing the fire truck. The bus struck the left side of the engine, crushing Hackett, who was on the extreme outside of the rear step. The second section of Engine 13 just missed hitting the first section engine and it continued to the fire at 39 Great Jones Street. The alarm was turned in by Chief John McElligott, who was in his night quarters at Engine 33’s house across the street. Both companies responded on the second alarm.
RIP. Never forget.
