Fireman Hanlon suffered a fatal heart attack while operating at a two-alarm shipyard fire.

Fireman William J. Hanlon collapsed while operating the pump on Engine 156 at a two-alarm shipyard fire on Richmond Terrace. Engine 156 had parked about a block away from the fire and was only operating for a half-hour when he suffered a heart attack. Hanlon moved to Staten Island twelve years earlier from Manhattan and was a member of the Department for fifteen years. He was married with two daughters.
