From the FDNY Facebook Page:
“I was walking to school and stopped by my friend’s house. Once I got inside, I saw his father on the floor in the kitchen. I noticed that he was unresponsive and gasping for air. He had no pulse. I immediately started chest compressions. The 911 operator guided me through the interventions. It was a chaotic situation. I was just trying to keep my friend and his family calm while performing the best possible CPR. Being a student at FDNY High School, I was taught CPR in our FDNY Prep Class. It installed confidence in me so when a situation like this did arise, I was ready to go,” said Cesar Reyes, who is a senior at FDNY Captain Vernon A. Richard High School for Fire and Life Safety.
Elijah Houston, a senior at FDNY Captain Vernon A. Richard High School said, “I entered the house and I saw Cesar, on the floor doing CPR. He was doing compressions for a few minutes at this point. The EMTs and Paramedics entered the house right behind me. I was trying to ascertain the patient’s medical information and guide the family through this stressful situation. CPR is so important for everyone to learn. You just don’t know when you might be put in a situation to save a life.”
FDNY Captain Vernon A. Richard High School students Cesar Reyes and Elijah Houston helped to save the life of their friend’s father earlier this month. Bystander CPR saves lives.
